Technology, that double edged sword. Having two young children it’s something I regularly grapple with. The educational side vs entertainment. Understanding they are growing up in a very different time to when I was young and to be excited about the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead.
Yet the hardest to handle is how much phones are in our lives.
Today I sit watching the turquoise colours of the Caribbean Sea glistening in front of me. The heat of the sun and a gorgeous light breeze around whilst contemplating what cocktail to discover today.
And then there is a voice. A very loud, American accent travelling towards us all. A man in the sea, headphones on and phone held high whilst he bops about in the crystal waters discussing whether he should be charging $75 an hour or $110. Dude, I don’t care and I don’t want to hear it. I don’t wish to be witnessing you peacocking. Great, good for you but please go somewhere private. Your room, for example?
Treat us all with a little dignity and respect and remove your abrasive conversation from my tranquil morning.
Honestly, when did this all become acceptable? To give not an ounce of consideration to others in your company and around you. It feels that Dom Joly sketch which was so amusing in the 90s is now the norm.
This is what concerns me most for the generations to come. Genuine communication, reading body language/ the room. Would you walk into a room of 30 people and shout a question? If no, why on a what’s app group?
Children mirror behaviours, those close to them most but their young impressionable minds are skewed by so much more. Taking in others behaviours and how adults behave towards them is noted even if they are unaware of it.
Manners maketh man could not be more a truer saying but are manners lost altogether in today’s world?
